DISRUPTIVE MATERIALS
Nanotechnology
In the start-up phase of Disruptive Materials, there was no infrastructure and information was shared using USB sticks like many other start-ups working with patents. This was not a good foundation on which to build the company and they saw a need to create an IT environment that they could grow with. Disruptive Materials made an early decision to put the entire infrastructure in the cloud instead of building its own IT structure, where the choice fell on Microsoft Cloud.
Disruptive Materials is today the only supplier in its industry that has chosen to base its service on Microsoft Azure, which has been highly appreciated by customers and contributed to increased growth. With the growth, Azure consumption increased, which meant that Detail Online was in need of cost optimization and proactive advice on their Azure environment.
– We found that cloud services allow for extremely great freedom in how you work. We also work a lot with patents and all the data that underpins patents and as everyone knows, patent data has to be kept quite close, you have to have full control of what is happening, it must not be disseminated, not even by mistake. And as we work more with ISO principles and look more at quality and happening in a more formal format, we find that going with a cloud service works extremely well and actually fully supports all the security and quality requirements, says Oskar Lund, CFO at Disruptive Materials.
The choice of a Microsoft 365 gives employees freedom in their way of working, which enables creativity and collaboration with universities and partner companies. By investing early in a cloud-based IT environment, Disruptive Materials, despite strong growth, has never experienced digital growing pains from the IT choices they have made.
Employees can work from anywhere and have the freedom to be creative and productive in their work. Employees can easily collaborate and communicate with colleagues, universities and partner companies through smart platforms such as teams and planner. Employees can securely work with sensitive patent data while having a modern cloud-based workplace that supports the creative approach needed to develop innovative products.
Challenge
In the start-up phase of Disruptive Materials, there was no infrastructure and information was shared using USB sticks like many other start-ups working with patents. This was not a good foundation on which to build the company, and there was a need to create an IT environment that they could grow with. As the company works closely with research, there was also a need to offer a flexible workplace that can be accessed from the university, from home or a partner company, for example.
Solution
Disruptive Materials made the decision early on to put its entire infrastructure in the cloud instead of building its own IT structure. The choice of a Microsoft 365 gives employees freedom in their way of working, which enables creativity and collaboration with universities and partner companies. By investing early in a cloud-based IT environment, Disruptive Materials, despite strong growth, has never experienced digital growing pains from the IT choices they have made.
Outcome
Freedom: Employees can work anywhere and are given the freedom they need to be creative and productive in their work.
Collaboration: Easy for staff to collaborate and communicate with colleagues, universities and partner companies.
Security: Employees can securely work with sensitive patent data while having a modern cloud-based workplace that supports the creative approach needed to develop innovative products.
– We have been able to grow very quickly in a flexible way thanks to these solutions. And we have never experienced growing pains as a result of the IT choices we have made, which I know from experience is quite unusual,” says Oskar Lund, CTO at Disruptive Materials.
